The design of the Postgraduate Programme entitled “Endocrine Surgery” was based on a comprehensive assessment of the needs and orientation of healthcare professionals for specialisation in this specific field of knowledge.
Endocrine surgery is a significant but relatively less-known branch of surgery to the general public, dealing with serious benign or malignant conditions of the human body. In the Western world, it is estimated that there are fewer than 500 specialised endocrine surgeons. Consequently, even in countries like the USA, approximately 80% of endocrine procedures are performed by non-specialised surgeons, despite the fact that studies with large patient series have proven that morbidity and mortality rates are significantly lower in specialised centres.
The European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) has established the sub-specialisation of Endocrine Surgery within the framework of the General Surgery specialty and awards a title following examinations.
A major milestone in Europe was the founding of the European Society of Endocrine Surgeons (ESES) in 2003, which coordinates national societies, offers certification, issues clinical guidelines, supports its members and their research efforts through scholarships, and records European epidemiological data in a common database (Eurocrine).

The subject of the Programme is the education of postgraduate students in modern scientific developments, the promotion of knowledge, and the development of research in the field of managing patients with thyroid cancer. The curriculum does not substitute the official specialisation programme for healthcare professionals but aims to provide all relevant theoretical knowledge, from basic sciences to clinical management guidelines and the specialties providing complementary treatments.
The purpose of the Programme is the acquisition of theoretical knowledge and the deepening of understanding regarding the pathophysiological mechanisms leading to endocrine gland development, early diagnosis and investigation, perioperative care, and finally, surgical treatment techniques.
The maximum annual number of students admitted to the M.Sc. is set at thirty (30). The minimum number of students required for the Programme’s sustainability is estimated at seven (7). Indicatively, by the end of June each year, following a decision by the School Assembly, the call for applications is published. Applications are typically submitted from June until the end of July; this period may be extended by decision of the School Assembly.
The M.Sc. is structured into four (4) semesters with a duration of thirteen (13) weeks each.
The M.Sc. follows a blended learning system, which combines the face-to-face educational process with distance learning. Courses are conducted through physical presence for twenty percent (20%) of the total teaching hours and using synchronous distance learning methods for eighty percent (80%) of the total teaching hours.
All courses of the program are taught in the Greek language, and the language for the preparation of the Master’s Thesis is also Greek.
For their participation in the M.Sc., students pay total tuition fees amounting to three thousand euros (€3,000.00). The payment of tuition fees is made either in full or in two (2) equal installments into a bank account held by the Special Account for Research Funds (E.L.K.E.) of AUTh. Failure to fulfill financial obligations constitutes sufficient grounds for non-awarding of the Master’s Degree or dismissal from the M.Sc.
Postgraduate students may study free of charge provided they meet specific financial or social criteria. A prerequisite for granting this right is the possession of a first-cycle degree or diploma with a grade equal to or higher than seven and a half out of ten (7.5/10). The total number of beneficiaries may not exceed the number corresponding to thirty percent (30%) of the total enrolled students per year.
